Quick Guide: Infrastructure - Modbus Devices

Managing power efficiently is one of the most important parts of running a mining operation. While Smart PDUs give device-level visibility, they don’t always capture the full picture of site-level or circuit-level power usage. This is where Modbus devices come in.

 

What is a Modbus Device?

Unlike a single standalone unit, Modbus is a communication standard (protocol) that enables data exchange between electrical monitoring devices and management systems. These devices can be both read from and written to, allowing Foreman to collect real-time data and send commands back when needed.

In mining, Modbus devices are typically electrical meters installed at the circuit, panel, or site level. They capture energy usage data and report it digitally using the Modbus protocol — a widely adopted standard in industrial energy monitoring.

This means you’re not limited to values reported by individual miners. Instead, you gain visibility into the true load on your electrical infrastructure.

 

What Values Do Modbus Devices Capture?

Depending on the model, Modbus-supported devices can provide metrics such as:

  • Voltage (V) – supply voltage per phase

  • Current (A) – amperage drawn through the circuit

  • Power (kW) – real-time power consumption

  • Power Factor (PF) – efficiency of power usage

  • Energy (kWh) – cumulative energy consumed

  • Frequency (Hz) – line frequency (50/60 Hz)

Because this data comes directly from your electrical system, it’s more accurate than miner firmware or nameplate estimates.

 

How Modbus Devices Work in Foreman

When integrated into Foreman, Modbus devices unlock smarter, circuit-level power management:

  • Real-Time Monitoring – Foreman ingests Modbus values to show live site-wide power usage.

  • Accurate Reporting – Reports reflect actual energy usage, not estimates.

  • Targeted Dispatches – During demand response, Foreman uses Modbus data to identify overloaded circuits and selectively power down miners only where needed.

  • Breaker Protection – By monitoring amperage and load, Foreman can prevent breaker trips by throttling or shutting down miners before thresholds are exceeded.

 

Why It Matters

Without Modbus, dispatch decisions rely on estimates and typically happen at the site level — often shutting down more miners than necessary. With Modbus, Foreman gains precise circuit-level visibility, leading to:

  • Fewer miners offline during curtailment

  • More uptime and efficiency

  • Reduced risk of overloading circuits
