Quick Guide: Metered Site Load

Managing power accurately is one of the most important parts of running a mining operation. Traditional site-level estimates don’t always give the precision needed to maximize uptime and efficiency. By adding a power meter as an infrastructure device, you can monitor power draw at the circuit level and enable auto-adjusting, targeted dispatches. This way, Foreman can ensure you meet your curtailment commitments while maximizing the number of miners that keep mining.

There are two ways users can feed Site Meter data into Foreman:

  • Power Partner Integration
    • Many of our Power Partners (eg Voltus, CPower, etc.) provide access to meter data via API. When available, Foreman polls the power partner API on a regular cadence to retrieve real-time meter data and feeds it into the Foreman system.
  • Modbus Power Meter Infrastructure Device (BETA)
    • Foreman can directly integrate with on-site power meters that support the Modbus protocol. For additional information on configuring a Modbus power meter, [insert link].

How is Power Meter Utilized

Power meter data is displayed to users through the power meter tiles on the main dashboard and the Power Command Center, allowing for comparison with the estimated miner draw to identify potential issues. Users should expect to see a slight difference between the estimated and metered values due to the nuances of estimating miner power draw and other infrastructure on site that draws power (e.g. cooling, networking gear, lighting, etc.).

Power meter data can also be used to facilitate targeted or partial curtailments of the site, either via a Power Partner integration or in the UI via Setpoint Dispatches (BETA). These types of dispatches auto-adjust throughout the curtailment window in response to changes in power draw at the site (e.g. cooling shuts down due to fewer miners mining) or to mid-dispatch modifications to the target/setpoint.

While in BETA, both Modbus Power Meter support and Setpoint Dispatches will require assistance from the Foreman team to enable and configure, and may require additional licensing.
